Thank you, THE PLAN, for featuring Albina Library. Designed by LEVER in collaboration with Multnomah County Library and Noll & Tam Architects, the renovation and expansion of Portland’s historic Carnegie-era library reestablishes the building as a civic and community resource while integrating seismic retrofitting and contemporary public spaces. The project was informed by more than 75 community engagement sessions, shaping the library’s spatial organization and public functions through collaboration with local residents and youth.
The expanded library connects the historic structure with a new addition through a material and formal relationship that references the surrounding neighborhood context. Brick cladding and a terracotta-inspired palette link the addition to the original building, while the site’s grade change positions the adult reading room above the entrance and overlooking the courtyard. The 41,000-square-foot project includes a double-height entry lobby, timber structure, community room, study spaces, and flexible gathering areas designed to support a range of community uses.
The project also emphasizes sustainability and social connectivity through natural light, adaptable interiors, and integrated art and technology. Additional project partners include Andersen Construction, Ground Workshop, Valar Consulting Engineering, Arris Consulting, and Vaagen Timber.
