In December of 2018, the International Code Council passed 14 code changes relating to mass timber construction. These updates will establish three new categories for mass timber construction relating to the degree to which the wood is covered, along with new height allowances for each. Allowable areas for mass timber structures would also be increased.

LEVER's work and continued research partnerships have helped raise awareness for the viability of wider adoption of mass timber technology in the US. These efforts are highlighted in Architectural Record's article on the recent code changes. LEVER's Thomas Robinson also shares his thoughts on the positive impact that these updates could have for building with mass timber in the US.
