Designed by LEVER, the Portland Museum of Art’s new open-air pavilion creates a temporary outdoor exhibition and gathering space adjacent to the museum on Free Street in Portland, Maine. Developed in collaboration with project manager Urban Projects Collaborative, the pavilion will support artist commissions, outdoor installations, workshops, film screenings, performances, youth-led projects, and seasonal community events, with informal gathering areas and public seating.

The pavilion is being constructed largely from Maine-sourced timber and regional materials, with Woodhull and WholeTrees involved in construction and fabrication. Designed for disassembly, the structure is intended to be deconstructed, relocated, and repurposed when construction begins on the museum’s planned permanent expansion. The pavilion is scheduled to open in early October 2026, coinciding with the First Friday Art Walk.
