Portland State University celebrated the groundbreaking of its Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design on September 17, 2024. Designed by LEVER, the 98,000-square-foot facility will be the university's first fully mass timber building. The structure emphasizes accessibility and educational equity, with light-filled classrooms, studios, and galleries. Its mass timber construction offers a sustainable alternative to concrete and steel, aligning with the school’s focus on creativity, sustainability, and interdisciplinary practice. The building honors the Schnitzer family for their long-standing contributions to the university and the arts. Completion is expected in 2026.
